The Premise Of A Keto Diet Told With A Mexican Hot Chocolate
THE PREMISE OF A KETO DIET FOR BEGINNERS
Of course, everyone has heard the term “low-carb”, right? Say the word, “keto” in a group setting and you’ll definitely hear a lot of opinions on each side of the coin.
But, it’s only your opinion that matters when it comes to how you wish to enjoy your food. Well, you and whatever your doctor says!
I started the Keto Diet as a way to learn to enjoy my favorite foods in a healthier way while upping my protein intake. I also needed a reminder to drop the stupid snacks that I craved. You know the ones. Chips, dips, cookies, ice cream, and the list goes on and on.
To no one’s surprise, you will feel better when you drop the carby baggage and eat more protein. You truly will feel better long before you notice any outward changes.
Here’s a Quick Keto Breakdown of the Basics You Need To Know:
-Keto is a low-carb, high-fat diet
-Reducing carbs puts you into a metabolic state called ketosis
-Ketosis enables your body to burn fat for energy
-The keto diet reduces blood sugar and insulin levels
-Ketosis is typically achieved by consuming no more than 50 grams of carbohydrates daily
Here’s a Quick Keto Do’s and Don’ts List
-Avoid or reduce sugary foods, grains, starches, unhealthy fats, and some condiments and sauces
-Avoid alcohol especially if it triggers you to want carb-heavy snacks
-Enjoy meat, fatty fish, butter, cream, cheese, nuts, and seeds
-Enjoy exercise, go for walks, and remember to enjoy yourself. You’ve got this, this is your journey
LOW-CARB FOODS ARE EVERYWHERE
Lucky for you Keto is wildly marketed in your local stores and online, You can even sign up for a snack delivery service and have low-carb treats delivered to your home or office.
However, moving away from some of the snacks that got you to a place you don’t want to be may be the best course of action. Over time, you may even find you enjoy cleaner and whole foods instead of shelf-stable processed ones.
One super easy and important tool to be sure that you are meeting your goals and learning about carb totals in food is a simple app for your phone or tablet.
Carb Manager is a popular one and I used it religiously for a few months. This app has so many restaurants and common foods in the database to make tracking easy as keto pie 🤣. You can set your goals and plug in your food and boom – you’re a tracking star!
After a while, you’ll learn what should be on your plate and how it makes you feel. Energy and satiety are important! Make sure to note how you feel. Especially in the beginning. The Keto Flu is a real thing to be on the lookout for but I promise you, that you’ll feel amazing after you push through.
AN EASY AND DELICIOUS RECIPE IS THE BEST WAY TO ATTACK THE KETO DIET FOR BEGINNERS
It’s so important to have ingredients on hand. Without them, you’ll likely make some decisions that may not align with your goals.
I can’t tell you how many times hungry gets to hangry and then I’m on Doordash. We are stronger than this! Planning is key. Simple is also key.
This Keto Mexican Hot Chocolate is the perfect quick snack. It’s also gluten-free if you care about that. Let’s make a cup together.
You’re going to love the limited ingredients and simple process!
We’ll start with our liquids. I used one and a quarter cups of unsweetened almond milk and half of a cup of heavy whipping cream. The heavy cream will give you the thick creaminess of a naughty hot chocolate. You don’t have to use flavored milk. Just make sure whatever you use will fit your low-carb goals.
Next, we’ll gather our dry ingredients which are 2 tablespoons of unsweetened cocoa powder, a quarter teaspoon of cinnamon, and 2 tablespoons of sweetener (I used a zero-carb monk fruit which I find is not a sugar-forward as others meaning I always go heavier when using it. Test out your sugar alternative for the desired sweetness in this recipe).
Finally, let’s add some heat. Play around with the spice level until it’s perfect for you. An eighth to a quarter teaspoon of chipotle powder or cayenne pepper.
HOT CHOCOLATE IS ONE OF THE MANY KETO DIET BENEFITS
Sure, there are foods that you should give up. Luckily, hot creamy chocolate isn’t one of them. Not today, so let’s enjoy.
Add all of the ingredients into a saucepan over medium to medium-high heat. We want to achieve a gentle simmer, do not let it boil rapidly!
At first, the dry ingredients will sit on the top of the liquids and you may think it won’t come together into a smooth and creamy snack dream. But, good news – all you need is a whisk.
Whisk constantly to incorporate the spices while the liquid heats and when it’s perfect, remove from the stove and serve it in 2 of your favorite mugs.
Top with whipped cream and you have yourself one spicy and delicious low-carb snack that comes in under 4 net carbs per serving.
While this delicious cup of hot chocolate is shy on the protein needed for a well-rounded day, it’s a satisfying and yummy start to delving into the world of keto. Simple, fun, and delicious. Enjoy!
