Thanksgiving is all about pacing.  Sure, the star is the turkey which is naturally low-carb.  But that doesn’t mean we can’t enjoy a few keto snacks before the main course.

Holiday gatherings truly begin with that first drink in hand while surveying the appetizer table.  Well, that’s how it always was at my grandmother’s house.

She was famous for her deviled eggs and pre-21, my cousins and I would fight over the sorbet punch which debuted on Thanksgiving.  It also made a repeat performance at Christmas. and was then MIA until the following year.  It was hard to wait all year for those treats and don’t even get me started on her Swedish Meatballs.

Typically, the main course for a large holiday gathering is still in the final cooking or warming stages as guests arrive.  Therefore, appetizers are necessary, and I have you covered this year if you’re looking for some low-carb options.

1.  Lit’l Smokies or Kielbasa – A Keto Dream

In my opinion, these are interchangeable with really only one difference.  Kielbasa should be served with a crispy edge while the smokies can remain supple.  But both should be served in a flavorful and sweet sauce.  Well, at Thanksgiving anyway.  Who can pass up a grilled kielbasa with a grainy mustard in the summer?

This one is easy!

Keto Kielbasa Appetizer Recipe (but also try it with smokies!)
  • 1 Package of Kielbasa, Cut However You’d Like
  • 1/4 C G. Hughes Sugar-Free Chili Sauce
  • 1 C G. Hughes Sugar-Free Hickory BBQ Sauce
  • 1/4 C Keto Brown Sugar (Serve Works Great With This Recipe)
  • Salt, Pepper, and Garlic Powder To Taste

Method:  Combine everything in a medium saucepan and bring it to a gentle boil.  Then let it simmer on low for however long you’d like.  Transfer it to an oven-safe dish just before service and broil until you reach your desired crispiness.  I like to add a little garlic salt just before this step.

2.  Low-Carb Spinach Stuffing Balls

These are a bright addition to your starters list and a great way to use up stuffing.  Here’s an easy make-ahead low-carb stuffing recipe, too.

Keto Spinach Balls Appetizer Recipe 
  • 25 oz Thawed Frozen Spinach Squeezed and Drained Well
  • 2 C Low-Carb Stuffing
  • 1 Medium Onion Grated
  • 2 C Pepper Jack Cheese
  • 1/2 Stick Butter Melted with 3 Cloves Minced Garlic (Less or More Based on Your Garlic Preference)
  • 6 Eggs Beaten Well
  • Salt and Pepper, To Taste

Method:  Combine the 4 ingredients in a large bowl.  Beat the eggs in a separate bowl then combine with the spinach stuffing mixture and season with salt and pepper.  Preheat the oven to 350 degrees.  Using a scoop, form even-sized balls and place them on a sheet pan and into the freezer to set for 20 – 30 minutes.  Let thaw slightly (10 – 15 minutes) before cooking and bake on a lined sheet pan in the oven for 20 – 30 minutes.

3.  Sweet Low-Carb Pecans With 5-Spice And Nutmeg

Nuts are a great keto appetizer for two reasons.  You can change up the flavors which is fun, and you can serve them in smaller bowls spread around the party room.  Everyone loves snacking on sweet and flavorful pecans!

Keto 5-Spice Pecans
  • 8 oz Raw Pecan Halves
  • 3 T Butter
  • 1/3 C Heavy Whipping Cream
  • 1/2 Cup Swerve Sugar Substitute
  • 1 T Nutmeg
  • 2 T 5-Spice
  • 1 T Vanilla Extract
  • Salt, To Taste

Method:  Spread the pecans on a sheet pan and bake at 350 degrees for 8 minutes.  Meanwhile, in a saucepan, combine the butter through the vanilla extract.  Heat until combined and bubbly.  Add the warmed pecans until well combined.  Using a slotted spoon, spread out the pecans on a sheet pan.  Sprinkle with salt and let cool in the refrigerator until set.

4.  Low-Carb Camembert and Prosciutto Roll-Ups

These are fun and I make them a few times a year.  I prefer camembert, but a brie also works.  The thyme really adds some earthiness to this super-easy low-carb treat.  This one is a must-try!

Keto Camembert & Proscuitto Appetizer Recipe 
  • 1 Whee Camembert or Brie Cheese
  • 2 Packages Proscuitto Slices
  • 1 Medium Head Romaine, Stalks Removed, Leaves Only 
  • Dried Thyme

Method:  Layer the prosciutto, slightly overlapping each other, on plastic wrap.  Next, layer the romaine using only the soft leaves.  The harder stalks may tear the delicate prosciutto.  Keep the romaine about 1/2 of an inch from one end of the prosciutto base.  Then layer thin cut pieces of the camembert and sprinkle dried thyme.  Begin to tight roll leaving the 1/2 inch gap as the last part that is rolled.  The ingredients will spread and you’ll need a little bit of the prosciutto to act as a glue to keep it all together.  Wrap the log in plastic wrap and place it in the refrigerator until you’re ready to slice it.  A sharp knife is best.  Do not use a serrated knife.  You should yield 3 rolls from 2 packages of prosciutto.
