Technically, the TikTok trend is a smash burger with beef and all the cool kids are calling it a smash taco.  I’m definitely a fan of the crispy edges of a ground beef smash burger and I’m always a fan of a taco.  However, I’m on the lookout for healthier and turkey fits that bill.

To my surprise, the thin spread of turkey on the tortilla closely mimicked beef in all the right ways and I was definitely a happy camper.

Low Carb Doesn’t Have To Be Boring

Did you or are you struggling as you adapt to a low-carb lifestyle?  Believe me, I know change can be hard and I found it frustrating to give up some of my naughty favorite foods.  Especially the comfort food classics.  I”m thinking of pizza in Brooklyn and my mom’s baked ziti with a side of garlic bread.  Some of those memories and flavors cannot be duplicated and so the low-carb dupes I try do not always live up to the hype.

While there is nothing new about a smash burger or a low-carb tortilla, there is something absolutely satisfying and filling about this recipe.  So much so, that I would definitely have added it to my normal food rotation.  To me, it’s just a bonus that it’s low-carb and takes only a few minutes of cooking time.  Truly.

In fact, I used my phone’s stopwatch to see and it was under 5 minutes of total cooking time in the skillet.  So, let’s get into it!

Keto Recipes With Turkey Meat

I mixed 1 pound of ground turkey meat with some of my favorite spices and formed 6 balls.  I always buy large low-carb tortillas.  I’ll leave it to you to decide if that will work for you or if you think the smaller ones will do.  If you use the large ones you’ll probably want to use 2 balls meaning there are 3 servings per pound of ground turkey.

I know the idea of a smash burger is to literally smash it but I wanted even distribution and I wanted to bring the meat as far to the edges as I could so I used my hands to gently and evenly spread the meat and then topped it with a little bit of my favorite steak seasoning.

Next, heat a pan on high heat with a touch of oil and fry the tortilla meat side down.   This is the result of 1 minute and 30 seconds.  Incredible, right?  That’s so quick!

Next, you can add cheese while the other side of the tortilla cooks.  You’ll want to move quickly or you’ll risk burning it.  I used my favorite smoked cheddar and then did that old diner trick.  I added a little water around the perimeter of the pan and put on a lid letting the steam melt the cheese for about a minute.

In all, the cooking time was about 3 minutes!  I know, so quick – right?

Ground Turkey Smash Burger "Taco"

Servings: 3


  • 1 # Ground Turkey Breast
  • 2 T Garlic Powder
  • 1 T Onion Salt
  • 1 T Garlic Salt
  • 1 T Steak Seasoning Your Favorite
  • Pepper To Taste
  • 3 ea Low-Carb Tortillas
  • 1-2 T Avocado Oil
  • Cheese Your Favorite
  • Lettuce
  • Tomato
  • Pickles
  • Red Onion


  • In a bowl, combine the ground turkey and the garlic powder, onion salt, garlic salt, steak seasoning, and pepper
  • Form 6 balls and spread 2 balls onto a large tortilla. Or, using smaller tortillas, 1 ball. Spread the meat thinly and evenly and sprinkle more steak seasoning on top if desired
  • Heat a large skillet on high and add oil. Once the oil is hot, place the tortilla, meat side down in the skillet and cook for 90 seconds or until the meat is fully cooked and browned
  • Flip the tortilla and add cheese and a few drops of water around the side of the pan immediately covering it to let steam melt the cheese. Continue cooking for about a minute being careful that the bottom of the tortilla does not burn
  • Place the tortilla on a plate and add the toppings. Fold or roll the tortilla and enjoy!
