A Real Review Of 4 Of TikTok’s Most Popular Keto Recipes
1. Keto Snacks Are Always Popular
So, I assumed this one would be incredible. This keto snack is simple, fast and right up your alley if you’re a ‘cheese-a-holic’. It’s a Keto Onion Ring.
You’ll need something like the Mini Dash to make your keto onion rings (and so much more).
Did you jump on this trend last year? If not, here is your sign to pick up the Mini Dash. It’s so small and cute and CHEAP! I am VERY excited to try the ‘Chaffle’ bread recipe and make a cheeseburger. Come back for that recipe!
Back to the keto onion ring, my review: Here’s a video from my TikTok page. PS: I’m terrible at making TikTok’s – feel free to mock away (insert laughing emoji here).
I’m calling it early. It’s a fail. It may be operator error (it probably IS operator error), but it is a fail.
This is what you can expect unless you have a better way of making it pretty. If you do, tell me! Because the flavors were there for me, I love cheese and onion and it mimicked an onion ring. But it just wasn’t …. enough.
Ok, so maybe you’re looking at this and thinking that it’s not that bad. And, you’re right. It’s not that bad, but it’s not that great either. One side is overdone and one side is half overdone.
I guess my big gripe is; why am I wasting calories on a less than spectacular hunk of cheese? But listen, after a night out at the bar, I’m sure a few of these will easily be frisbeed into my face with zero complaints. What’s that saying; know your audience? The same holds true for me given the time of day and the activities leading up to the need for a keto snack.
If you’re on TikTok, follow Janelle Rohner. That’s where this recipe came from and while this one didn’t work for me, she has so many other yummy ideas that I have tried and love.
2. My Favorite Keto Snack
I found this next TikTok recipe on KetoCraig’s page and it does not disappoint. Say this out loud; Keto Philly Cheesesteak Rolls. Now, screenshot the following and RUN to the store.
- 2 C Monterey Jack Cheese
- 16 oz Ground Beef
- 1/2 Medium Onion, Sliced
- 1 Green Pepper, Sliced
- 1 T Worcestershire
- 4 oz Cream Cheese
- Pre-heat oven to 350 degrees
- Put circles of cheese on a lined baking sheet and bake for 10 minutes or until the edges are browned
- Meanwhile, cook the ground beef with salt, pepper, and a bit of crushed red pepper
- Next, drain the beef and return to the skillet and add the Worcestershire and cream cheese, stirring until melted.
- Let the cheese circles cool enough to handle them but still warm enough to roll and place the meat mixture in the center and roll that baby up, egg roll style.
Here’s your reminder to save on parchment paper with a Silpat. You’ll be French, you’ll feel cool! You’ll also save the parchment paper tree, lol. It’s a win-win!
And, look at this one – it already has the circle grids ready for your snacking needs.
I don’t know about you, but I like recipes that offer more than one way to enjoy the ingredients. So, these keto cheesesteak rolls were perfect! They are super easy to prep and you don’t have to use all of the ground beef. I made 5 for a snack and saved the ground beef mixture to add to an egg-white omelet the next day. I then had just enough left over to make more snack rolls the following day.
This was such a good and easy recipe. You must try it.
I’m now wondering if I should try these in the mini dash? I’ll report back if I do. I’m also feeling creative – it’s a cheese roll-up so really anything can go inside. I currently live in Philly so obviously I should try this with shaved steak and cheese whiz in place of the cream cheese.
“Whiz With” If you know you know.
3. New Keto Recipes; A Green Pepper Trend
I think with this one, you either love it or hate it. There’s no middle ground. Have you heard of this or tried it yet? The Green Pepper Sandwich.
So let us address the obvious. You’re eating a green pepper as if it’s the bread and if you have ever had a pepper, you know that size varies and the one that Whole Foods delivered to me was just way too big to attempt. I mean, I gave it the old college try – but some of the deli meat went shooting out the side resulting in a big mess.
But here’s the strange news, aka my review: It was delicious. I thought I would hate it. But no, I ended up eating it as an open-faced sandwich and I liked it. It was crunchy, it was yummy and it filled me up. That’s kinda the trifecta isn’t it?
I found this green pepper sandwich all over TikTok and then most of the socials. Everyone was trying it from amateur to professional chefs. Gordon Ramsey even got on the trend. I assume you can guess what type of review he had to offer. Haha.
A sandwich is a sandwich. You can put whatever you want inside. For mine, I put a little cream cheese and mustard in the cavity of the green pepper and added turkey, ham, a slice of provolone, and 2 strips of bacon. I can’t lie to you – of course, a green pepper is not even close to the same satisfaction as full-on carby bread. But, it really wasn’t terrible once you got past the comparison.
Because there is no comparison, a green pepper is a green pepper. But, if you want crunchy and filling and you have extra green peppers in the kitchen? Sure! Give it a try!
4. Keto Desserts Top My List Every Day
There are so many keto desserts online. I think the idea to splurge on dessert is what makes them popular and to know that you can have some of your favorites on a low carb diet makes this more of a lifestyle than a hardcore diet. Well, that’s what I think about the keto diet. But you’re not here for that, you want some recipes so let’s go!
I came across a lemon pound cake lookin’ recipe from KetoKellie late one evening and knew I had to give it a try. Let’s make a Low Carb Lemon Loaf.
- 5 Eggs
- 1/2 C Sugar Alternative
- 1/4 C Coconut Flour
- 4 T Fresh Lemon Juice (or, 3 T Fresh Lemon and 1 T Lemon Extract)
- 1/2 C Butter, Soft
- 1 T Baking Powder
- Pre-heat oven to 350 degrees
- Whisk the eggs in a large bowl and then add all remaining ingredients and combine
- Spoon into a lined loaf pan or spray/grease it as I did and it will be fine
- Bake for 45 minutes
Review: I wanted to love this. Lemon is my jam, but egg yolks are not. It was toooooo eggy for me. I cut a few pieces to make a cake pop ball as shown in the image above. I used Lily’s White Chocolate which is keto-friendly (you can find Lily’s on Amazon, in Walmart, and Whole Foods to name a few places).
It didn’t melt as normal chocolate does and was extra goopy. I thinned it out with some soy milk and coconut oil and overall, made the eggy flavor go away enough that I could deal with it. But, still not my favorite. I don’t know why I hate eggs so much (sigh).
But! I did give the remaining portion of the lemon loaf to a friend and she didn’t even share it with her husband. So, the moral of the story? You may love this and should try it!
Bonus: Mix 1/2 C sugar alternative, 4 T soft cream cheese, 2 T softened butter, 2 T lemon juice, and 1 T almond milk to form a frosting.
