I’m going to go with NONE. Ok, ok, calm down. If you know about keto and you’re rolling your eyes and yelling at me with words like SUGAR, BREAD and PASTA. Yes, you’re right. Those, in small to large amounts are bad for achieving ketosis.
But, are we to believe that being successful on this or any diet that completely eliminates SUGAR, BREAD and Pasta is a good thing? Nah. No one can live that way. No one should want to live that way.
You can’t tell me you’re going to turn down a trip to the boulangerie during your Paris vacation because you’re on keto. If so, please invite me and I’ll eat all the things for you.
So, let us be real. There will be times that you will have things that are not recommended on keto and instead of losing our minds about it and feeling fatty guilty regret, we’re going to knock that sh&t off and enjoy life knowing that we can and will get back on track.

Are you a newbie to keto and you’re not even sure what lazy keto means? In short, you can have 25 – 50 carbs per day. That coupled with watching your calories should result in weight loss. Here’s your first real exercise to answer the question and build your own lazy keto diet food list.
What do you like to eat? It’s that simple. Write down what you normally have over the course of a few days from breakfast through dinner and don’t exclude those snacks.
Step 3: 7 Day Lazy Keto Meal Plan
Ok, what did you write down? Does it look similar to what I put in my keto notebook?
Typical Meals:
- Breakfast – Egg Sandwich, Omelet or Dinner Leftovers Because I’m Lazzzzzy
- Lunch – Sandwich, Salad, Pasta, Dinner Leftovers Because I’m Super Lazzzzzy
- Snack – Power Bar, Fruit, Chocolate or Candy on Occasion, Not a Big Afternoon Snacker
- Dinner – Anything Mexican or Italian is Preferred but will likely eat Anything in General
- Snack – Something Sweet, on Occasion
Pro Tip: Don’t be afraid to be old school. Get a notebook as cheap or expensive as you wish and jot down your goals. Keep track of the things you learn and definitely keep a one – stop – shop of recipes you find along the way. A commitment to this is a commitment to you and you’re more likely to succeed if you put energy into it.
It was a tough pill for me to swallow, but I needed to lose weight and learn a healthy lifestyle because I didn’t put any energy into me. What a silly way to live, right?
If you don’t want a notebook, use the notes field on your phone. Just do something to keep this momentum going. My notebook has the following quote on the cover and I love it. What do you think?
ALL GREAT THINGS ARE ONLY A NUMBER OF SMALL THINGS THAT HAVE CAREFULLY BEEN COLLLECTED TOGETHER
Step 4: How Do You Start A Lazy Keto Diet
Go online and find one of those health calculators. Like this one. Click here to calculate your results.
Ok, great – you now know how many calories you need each day to stay the same which means you know what you need to lose weight. You’ve already learned that lazy keto is 25 – 50 carbs per day. So, let’s get that shopping list AKA Your Lazy Keto Food List ready.
Grab your pen, your fancy notebook, and we begin.
Write down all the things you like to eat in a day. Start getting familiar with your favorite foods by cross checking them in a keto app that you can download for free on your phone. I like this one:
It’s possible that things you love are already low carb. For example, do you like an omelet in the morning with cheese and spinach? Great! Super low in carbs.
But, do you like waffles? Not low in carbs. But that’s ok. We’re not divorcing waffles. We’re finding other ways to enjoy and stay present and lose weight.
This is your second exercise. Write down what you plan to eat over the next few days or week, use a keto calculator to check carbs and calories and even write down the high carb no-no’s like Ben and Jerry’s Chocolate Fudge Brownie Ice Cream and that wine (wink, wink).
Step 5: Beginners Keto Food List
Great – we’re making progress! Even if math isn’t your favorite, you now have a pretty good grasp on what needs work within your diet plan to stay within 25 – 50 carbs per day. So, let’s move on to my personal favorite step. It’s called: lazy couch surfing research.
Open up Tiktok, Instagram, Pinterest, YouTube or just plain Google and start searching. For example, do you need to have, like cannot live without pancakes on a Sunday morning? Cool – make ’em! Check out this low carb version from @theketodadlife on TikTok.
What about waffles? Are waffles your thing? Here’s a YouTube video from FatForWeightLoss.
This Dash mini waffle maker has so many uses for keto and it’s inexpensive.
While you’re shopping, check out a sugar alternative and sugar free maple syrup.
The grocery stores in my area are getting better at stocking sugar free / sugar alternatives so check your local store, too.
This is an easy and fun step, right? But, you may run into some issues with your research in the sweets department. Or, if you’re a pasta lover. Check out these related posts for some delicious surprises to add to your list!

The answer is – whatever you want it to.
Don’t forget. This is about you and about your timetable and your life. If you have a day when you are over your calories or carbs, you simply wake up ready to try again the next day. We don’t beat ourselves up or say negative things. Life happens, cake happens, vacation happens. So does getting back up on the horse. Not quitting and continuing happens also.
You’ll slowly or quickly learn more and and you’ll see improvements and benefits in obvious and maybe not so obvious places. And to me, that’s the real fun.
